In August 2009, Jerry left us suddenly. He will, however always be with us as we pass 'round his mug in toast to his life at every performance.
The Play's The Thing
A gentle sould, a winning laugh, an ever present smile,
A sparkle in his ageless eyes, a certain subtle style,
Never would he turn you down if he sensed you were in need;
His readiness to aid a friend that bore no trace of greed.
Where are you now when pageants call, how will the show go on?
Where is that voice, that skilled guitar, that we depend on ?
"The play's the thing", I think he'd say. "And now my part is done.
I've played it well, and made you laugh, and shared in so much fun."
I think now Rapunzel, St. George and Cuthbert too.
I think of years of laughter that he shared with all of you.
I swallow at my sorrow, for it doesn't seem quite fair,
But I know Jerry's watching with a wink and not a care.
When we sing of cuckoo's nests and flowing cups of ale,
Well he'll be there right beside us, without sadness, without fail.
I raise my glass and hold it high, but still I shed a tear.
Anon old friend, save us a seat and don't drink all the beer!
With love and fond memories
For Jerry
